Data suggest that one in every 10 people is now 60 years of age or older and it is said that by 2050, the numbers will become one in every five people. Due to our abilities to improve our medicines to common health issues, people nowadays are living longer. But as an aging human, we are not immune to the effects of aging, our bodies need more care and attention.

There can be many factors, and these includes: Depression: when you used to have joyful gatherings with your family but realized that they went to different places and you feel so alone. Money: there are many older people who suffer from financial insufficiency when it comes to buying healthy foods. Physical limitations: this can be an obstacle for an older person to buy the food he or she wants. Medications: there are numbers of medicines available in the market that can destroy an older person’s appetite. Memory loss: if an older person suffers from dementia, he might forget when it is time to eat. Lack of knowledge: there are few older people out there who doesn’t have any idea how to prepare a healthy diet. Keep in mind these food groups: Always maintain a healthy diet, as the old saying goes, “we are what we eat.” 1. Fats and Sugar: Keep in mind to only use this in moderation. 2. Milk and Dairy: consume this at least three times a day. 3. Fish and meat: at twice a day. 4. Potatoes, cereals, and bread: at least five portions per day. 5. Fruits and vegetables: this is vital to a balanced diet, consume for five portions every day. These are the common health issues for older persons. Micronutrient deficiencies: unhealthy diet is linked to many life-threatening diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Obesity: older people move less, and therefore, more energy are being stored rather than exhausted – this leads to overweight. Difficulty in Swallowing: after a particular stroke, this can be a huge problem for older people. Constipation: less mobility and difficulty in swallowing can lead to weight loss. Weight loss: difficulty in swallowing combined with poor appetite can lead to weight loss. Nutritional deficiencies: Folic Acid, Iron, Vit C and D are the most common deficiencies found in older persons. We must understand why our bodies may change as we age, this is the first step to prevention. Eating a well-balanced diet plus an everyday exercise helps us prolong our lives. It is also important to keep in mind that seeking medical advice is a must.
